What is Storymaps and why make storymaps?

ArcGIS StoryMaps is a web-based tool that allows telling a story with maps and other media. When I first became interested in digital humanities, I was searching for a way to do DH projects without a huge budget, and I started experimenting with StoryMaps. Below are simple examples.

“A Song of Travel to the Diamond Mountains” (1930) by Cho Aeyŏng (1911–2000)

This storymap is created to provide biographical information on Paek Sinae, the author of a short travelogue featured under “Translations.” You will see this linked in my translation published through PubPub.

Na Hyesŏk was Korea's first woman painter trained in Western art style, and her around-the-globe travel inspired me to start a digital humanities project. For more details on Na’s life and travels, please see “Translations” under the “Digital Humanities” tab.

This storymap on Na’s life was an earlier experiment in making a map online. It started with a small set of data with geo coordinates.

As you can see, Storymaps is a simple straightforward tool for digital storytelling. However, maps and text boxes do not allow much flexibility. I still find it fascinating to connect maps to a story, and I use the tool for teaching.
